About-Lahaul Spiti
Lahaul and Spiti district, which consists of the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti, is one of the 17 assembly districts that make up the Mandi Parliament Seat. It is a ST category assembly seat. The three most important political parties in this legislature are the BJP, HVC, and INC. Dr. Ram Lal Markanda, the assembly’s current MLA, and the district’s MP, Pratibha Singh, who represented the INC and won the district’s most recent Lok Sabha by-election in 2021 from Mandi after Ram Swaroop Sharma passed away, were both elected to serve in that body. The 2011 Census report notes that SC and ST assemblygoers make up 7.08% and 81.44% of the assembly’s overall voting population, respectively, in addition to Muslim voters, rural voters, and urban voters, who make up approximately 0.8%, 100%, and 0% of the population, respectively. During the 2019 Parliamentary Election, 24270 people cast ballots at the 92 polling places in this assembly. As of the 2019 election, 61.39% of Kasumpti registered voters participated in the assembly, compared to 73.37% in the 2017 election. Lahaul and Spiti district, which is geographically situated on the Tibetan Plateau, is connected to Manali via the Rohtang Pass. Kardang served as the capital of Lahaul and Dhankar as the capital of Spiti before the two districts were combined. Compared to the nearby Ladakhi-Balti languages spoken further north, they are more closely related to Standard Tibetan.
